Psalms 89:1-52 — God's Covenant with David
Ps.89.1-52
1A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. 2I will sing of the steadfast love of Yahweh forever; to all generations I will make known your faithfulness with my mouth. 3For I said, 'Steadfast love is built up forever; in the heavens you establish your faithfulness.' 4'I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: 5'I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.' Selah. 6The heavens will praise your wonders, Yahweh; your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. 7For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh? Who among the heavenly beings is like Yahweh? 8A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, great and awesome above all who surround him. 9Yahweh, God of Armies, who is like you? Mighty Yah, and your faithfulness surrounds you. 10You rule the swelling of the sea; when its waves rise up, you calm them. 11You crushed Rahab like a carcass; you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 12The heavens are yours, the earth also is yours; the world and its fullness, you founded them. 13North and south, you created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name. 14You have a mighty arm; your hand is strong, your right hand is exalted. 15Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and truth go before your face. 16Blessed are the people who know the joyful shout, who walk, Yahweh, in the light of your face. 17In your name they rejoice all day long, and in your righteousness they are exalted. 18For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor our horn is exalted. 19For our shield belongs to Yahweh, and our king to the Holy One of Israel. 20Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones, and said: 'I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted a chosen one from the people. 21I have found David my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, 22with whom my hand will be established; my arm also will strengthen him. 23No enemy will exact tribute from him, and no wicked man will oppress him. 24I will crush his adversaries before him, and strike down those who hate him. 25My faithfulness and my steadfast love will be with him, and in my name his horn will be exalted. 26I will set his hand on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers. 27He will call to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.' 28I will also appoint him as my firstborn , the highest of the kings of the earth. 29I will keep my steadfast love for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm with him. 30I will establish his offspring forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens. 31If his sons forsake my law, and do not walk in my judgments; 32if they profane my statutes, and do not keep my commandments; 33then I will punish their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. 34But I will not break off my steadfast love from him, nor deal falsely in my faithfulness. 35I will not profane my covenant, nor alter what has gone out of my lips. 36Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. 37His offspring will endure forever, and his throne like the sun before me. 38Like the moon it will be established forever, and a faithful witness in the sky.' Selah. 39But you have cast off and rejected; you have been furious with your anointed one. 40You have renounced the covenant of your servant; you have profaned his crown to the ground. 41You have broken down all his walls; you have brought his strongholds to ruin. 42All who pass by the way plunder him; he has become a reproach to his neighbors. 43You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; you have made all his enemies rejoice. 44You have also turned back the edge of his sword, and have not made him stand in the battle. 45You have made his splendor cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. 46You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah. 47How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire? 48Remember how short my lifespan is! For what vanity you have created all the children of man! 49What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the hand of Sheol? Selah. 50Where are your former acts of steadfast love, Lord, which you swore to David in your faithfulness? 51Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants; how I bear in my bosom the taunts of all the many peoples, 52with which your enemies have mocked, Yahweh, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one .
