Psalms 39:1-13 — The Brevity of Life
Ps.39.1-13
1For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. 2I said, “I will guard my ways so that I do not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth while the wicked are before me.” 3I was mute in silence; I kept still from speaking even what is good, and my pain was stirred up. 4My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: 5Make known to me, O LORD, my end and what the measure of my days is; let me know how fleeting I am. 6Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you; surely every human being stands as only a breath. Selah 7Surely a man walks about as an image; surely they are in turmoil for a breath; he heaps up, and does not know who will gather it. 8And now, Lord, what have I hoped for? My hope is in you. 9Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of a fool. 10I was mute; I did not open my mouth, because you had done it. 11Remove your plague from me; I am spent by the assault of your hand. 12With rebukes for iniquity you discipline a man, and like a moth you consume what is dear to him; surely every human being is only a breath. Selah 13Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my tears. For I am a sojourner with you, a resident alien like all my fathers.
