Psalms 51:1-19 — A Prayer of Repentance
Ps.51.1-19
1For the choirmaster . A psalm of David. 2When Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. 3Be gracious to me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions. 4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 5For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 6Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified when you speak and blameless when you judge. 7Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. 8Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 9Purge me with hyssop , and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 10Make me hear rejoicing and joy; let the bones you have crushed be glad. 11Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 12Create in me a clean heart , O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 13Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. 14Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit. 15Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 16Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 17O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 18For you do not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you take no pleasure in a burnt offering. 19The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and crushed heart, O God, you will not despise.
