Psalms 59:1-17 — A Prayer for Deliverance
Ps.59.1-17
1For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men, and they watched the house to kill him. 2Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; set me securely on high from those who rise up against me. 3Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men. 4For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men gather against me, not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD. 5For no guilt of mine, they run and prepare themselves. Awake to help me, and see! 6And You, O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to any wicked traitors. Selah. 7They return at evening, they howl like a dog, and prowl around the city. 8Behold, they spew from their mouths; swords are in their lips, for they say, “Who hears us?” 9But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You mock all the nations. 10O my strength , I will watch for You, for God is my fortress. 11My God of steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. 12Do not kill them, lest my people forget; scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield. 13For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, and for the curses and lies that they utter. 14Consume them in wrath, consume them until they are no more, that they may know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth. Selah. 15They return at evening, they howl like a dog, and prowl around the city. 16They wander about for food, and growl if they are not satisfied. 17But I will sing of Your strength, and I will sing aloud of Your steadfast love in the morning; for You have been a fortress to me, and a refuge in the day of my distress.
