Psalms 49:1-20 — The Folly of Trusting in Riches
Ps.49.1-20
1For the director. Of the sons of Korah. A psalm. 2Hear this, all peoples; listen, all inhabitants of the world, 3both low and high, together, rich and poor. 4My mouth will speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart understanding. 5I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will open my riddle with the lyre. 6Why should I fear in days of evil, when the iniquity at my heels surrounds me? 7Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the abundance of their riches— 8No brother can redeem a man; he cannot give to God his ransom price. 9For the ransom of their life is costly, and it can never suffice, 10that he should live on forever and not see the Pit. 11For he sees that wise men die; together the fool and the stupid perish and leave their wealth to others. 12Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever , their dwellings from generation to generation; they call lands by their own names. 13But man in honor does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish. 14This is their way—their folly; yet after them people approve their words. Selah 15Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; death will shepherd them. The upright will rule over them in the morning, and their form will waste away in Sheol, far from their lofty dwelling. 16But God will redeem my life from the hand of Sheol , for he will take me. Selah 17Do not fear when a man grows rich, when the glory of his house increases; 18for when he dies he will take nothing at all; his glory will not go down after him. 19Though he blesses himself during his life—and people praise you when you do well for yourself— 20he will come to the generation of his fathers; forever they will not see the light.
