Psalms 38:1-22 — A Prayer in Suffering

Ps.38.1-22

¹A psalm of David , for remembrance. ²O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. ³For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down upon me. ⁴There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. ⁵For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. ⁶My wounds grow foul and fester because of my foolishness. ⁷I am bent over and bowed down greatly; I go about mourning all day long. ⁸For my loins are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁹I am numb and utterly crushed; I groan because of the anguish of my heart. ¹⁰Lord, all my desire is before you, and my sighing is not hidden from you. ¹¹My heart pounds, my strength fails me; and as for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me. ¹²My loved ones and my friends stand at a distance from my affliction, and my kinsmen stand far away. ¹³Those who seek my life lay snares; those who seek my ruin speak of destruction, and they plot deception all day long. ¹⁴But I am like a deaf man who does not hear, and like a mute man who does not open his mouth. ¹⁵I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth there are no reproofs. ¹⁶For I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. ¹⁷For I said, “May they not rejoice over me; when my foot slips, they exalt themselves over me.” ¹⁸For I am ready to fall, and my pain is continually before me. ¹⁹For I declare my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. ²⁰But my enemies are vigorous and strong, and those who hate me wrongfully are multiplied. ²¹And those who repay evil for good oppose me, because I pursue what is good. ²²Do not forsake me, O LORD; my God, do not be far from me.
