Psalms 80:1-19 — A Prayer for Restoration

Ps.80.1-19

¹For the choirmaster. To the Lilies. A testimony. A psalm of Asaph. ²Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock; you who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. ³Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might, and come to save us! ⁴Restore us, O God; cause your face to shine , and we will be saved. ⁵O Yahweh God of Hosts, how long will you smoke with anger against the prayer of your people? ⁶You have fed them the bread of tears, and you have made them drink tears in full measure. ⁷You make us an object of contention to our neighbors, and our enemies mock among themselves. ⁸Restore us, O God of Hosts; cause your face to shine , and we will be saved. ⁹You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. ¹⁰You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land. ¹¹Its shade covered the mountains, and its branches the cedars of God. ¹²It sent out its branches to the Sea, and its shoots to the River. ¹³Why have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? ¹⁴The boar from the forest ravages it, and the creatures of the field feed upon it. ¹⁵Return, we pray, O God of Hosts! Look down from heaven and see, and attend to this vine, ¹⁶the root that your right hand has planted, and the son whom you have made strong for yourself. ¹⁷It is burned with fire, it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of your face. ¹⁸Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, upon the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself. ¹⁹Then we will not turn back from you; revive us, and we will call upon your name. Restore us, O Yahweh God of Hosts; cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
