Psalms 88:1-18 — A Cry in Despair
Ps.88.1-18
1A song, a psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. 2O LORD, God of my salvation, by day I cry out; at night I come before you. 3Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry. 4For my soul is full of troubles, and my life has drawn near to Sheol. 5I am counted with those who go down to the Pit; I have become like a man without strength. 6I am free among the dead , like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. 7You have put me in the lowest Pit, in dark places, in the depths. 8Your wrath has rested on me, and with all your breakers you have afflicted me. Selah 9You have put my acquaintances far from me; you have made me an abomination to them. I am shut in and cannot go out. 10My eye languishes because of affliction; every day I call on you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you. 11Do you perform wonders for the dead? Do the shades rise up to praise you? Selah 12Is your steadfast love recounted in the grave, your faithfulness in Abaddon? 13Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 14But I, O LORD, cry out to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. 15Why, O LORD, do you reject my soul? Why do you hide your face from me? 16Afflicted am I and dying from my youth; I bear your terrors; I am overwhelmed. 17Your burning anger has passed over me; your terrors have destroyed me. 18They surround me like water all day long; they close in on me together.
