Psalms 55:1-23 — A Prayer in Distress
Ps.55.1-23
1For the music director. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. 2Give ear, O God, to my prayer, and do not hide yourself from my plea. 3Attend to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint, and I moan. 4because of the voice of the enemy, because of the pressure of the wicked. For they heap trouble on me, and in anger they hate me. 5My heart writhes within me, and the terrors of death have fallen on me. 6Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror covers me. 7And I said, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and dwell at rest.” 8Behold, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah 9I would hurry to a place of escape for myself from the rushing wind, from the storm. 10Swallow them up, Lord; divide their tongue, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 11Day and night they go around her on her walls, and trouble and oppression are within her. 12Destruction is within her, and oppression and deceit do not depart from her public square. 13For it is not an enemy who taunts me—then I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who exalts himself against me—then I could hide from him. 14But it is you, a man my equal, my companion and my close acquaintance. 15We who once shared sweet counsel together; in the house of God we walked in the throng. 16Let death come suddenly on them; let them go down alive to Sheol, for evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. 17As for me, I call to God, and Yahweh will save me. 18Evening and morning and noon I complain and moan, and he hears my voice. 19He redeems my life in peace from the battle against me, for many are arrayed against me. 20God will hear and humble them—he who is enthroned from of old. Selah Because there is no change in them, they do not fear God. 21He stretched out his hands against those at peace with him; he profaned his covenant. 22His mouth is smooth as butter, but his heart is war; his words are softer than oil, yet they are drawn swords. 23Cast on Yahweh what has been assigned to you , and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
