Psalms 44:1-26 — A National Lament

Ps.44.1-26

¹For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. ²O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work you did in their days, in the days of old. ³You drove out the nations with your hand, and planted them; you afflicted the peoples, and spread them abroad. ⁴For they did not take possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them; but it was your right hand , and your arm, and the light of your face, because you favored them. ⁵You are my King, O God; command victories for Jacob. ⁶Through you we push down our foes; through your name we trample those who rise up against us. ⁷For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not save me. ⁸But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to shame those who hate us. ⁹In God we have boasted all day long, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah. ¹⁰Yet you have rejected and disgraced us, and you do not go out with our armies. ¹¹You make us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. ¹²You give us up like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations. ¹³You sell your people for nothing, and have made no profit from their sale. ¹⁴You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and a derision to those around us. ¹⁵You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head in scorn among the peoples. ¹⁶All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame covers my face, ¹⁷at the voice of the one who taunts and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger. ¹⁸All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. ¹⁹Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not strayed from your path, ²⁰yet you have crushed us in a place of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. ²¹If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a foreign god, ²²would not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. ²³For your sake we are killed all day long; we are regarded as sheep for the slaughter. ²⁴Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not reject us forever. ²⁵Why do you hide your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression? ²⁶For our life has sunk down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.
