Psalms 44:1-26A National Lament

Ps.44.1-26
1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. 2O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work you did in their days, in the days of old. 3You drove out the nations with your hand, and planted them; you afflicted the peoples, and spread them abroad. 4For they did not take possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them; but it was your right hand , and your arm, and the light of your face, because you favored them. 5You are my King, O God; command victories for Jacob. 6Through you we push down our foes; through your name we trample those who rise up against us. 7For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not save me. 8But you have saved us from our foes, and have put to shame those who hate us. 9In God we have boasted all day long, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah. 10Yet you have rejected and disgraced us, and you do not go out with our armies. 11You make us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. 12You give us up like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations. 13You sell your people for nothing, and have made no profit from their sale. 14You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and a derision to those around us. 15You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head in scorn among the peoples. 16All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame covers my face, 17at the voice of the one who taunts and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger. 18All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. 19Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not strayed from your path, 20yet you have crushed us in a place of jackals, and covered us with deep darkness. 21If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a foreign god, 22would not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 23For your sake we are killed all day long; we are regarded as sheep for the slaughter. 24Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not reject us forever. 25Why do you hide your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression? 26For our life has sunk down to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.
