Luke 23:1-25 — Jesus Before Pilate and Herod
Luke.23.1-25
1Then their whole multitude rose and led him to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.” 3And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” 4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.” 5But they kept insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, and beginning from Galilee as far as this place.” 6When Pilate heard this , he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that he was under Herod's authority, he sent him on to Herod, who was himself also in Jerusalem in those days. 8When Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for he had for a long time wanted to see him, because he had heard about him , and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. 9And he questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer. 10And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11And even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him ; and after clothing him in a splendid robe, he sent him back to Pilate. 12And Herod and Pilate became friends with one another on that very day, for previously they had been at enmity with each other . 13And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people; and behold, after examining him before you, I found no basis for the charges you bring against this man.” 15But neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us . And behold, he has done nothing deserving of death. 16Therefore I will punish him and release him. 18But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!” 19He had been thrown into prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder. 20But Pilate addressed them again , wanting to release Jesus. 21But they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22A third time he said to them, “Why? What evil has this man done? I have found in him no basis for a death sentence. Therefore I will punish him and release him.” 23But they kept pressing him with loud voices, demanding that he be crucified, and their voices prevailed . 24So Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand should be carried out. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they were asking for, but Jesus he delivered over to their will.
