Luke 4:14-30 — Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Luke.4.14-30

¹⁴Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through all the surrounding region. ¹⁵He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by everyone. ¹⁶And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. ¹⁷And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written: ¹⁸"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, ¹⁹to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." ²⁰Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. ²¹He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” ²²All bore witness to him and marveled at the words of grace proceeding from his mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph's son?” ²³And he said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard happened in Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'” ²⁴Then he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. ²⁵But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land. ²⁶Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ²⁷And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." ²⁸And all the people in the synagogue were filled with wrath when they heard these things. ²⁹They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. ³⁰But passing through the midst of them , he went on his way .
