Matthew 27:57-66 — Burial; the Guard at the Tomb
Matt.27.57-66
57When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea arrived, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him . 59So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. 62The next day, that is, after the Preparation Day , the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate 63and said, 'Sir, we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, “After three days I will rise.”' 64Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him away and say to the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception will be worse than the first. 65Pilate said to them, 'You have a guard. Go, make it secure as you know how.' 66So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.
