Matt.27.11-26

¹¹Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You yourself say so.” ¹²And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. ¹³Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?” ¹⁴But he did not answer him with regard to even one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed. ¹⁵Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted. ¹⁶At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas . ¹⁷So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” ¹⁸For he knew that it was because of envy that they had handed him over. ¹⁹While he was sitting on the judgment seat , his wife sent word to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much today in a dream because of him.” ²⁰But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death. ²¹The governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” ²²Pilate said to them, “What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified.” ²³But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they kept shouting all the more, “Let him be crucified.” ²⁴When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that an uproar was developing, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this blood . See to it yourselves.” ²⁵And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children.” ²⁶Then he released Barabbas to them, but after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.
