Matthew 22:15-22 — Paying Taxes to Caesar
Matt.22.15-22
15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap him in what he said. 16And they sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians, saying, 'Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you teach the way of God in truth. You defer to no one, for you do not judge by people's status.' 17Tell us, then, what you think: Is it lawful to pay tax to Caesar or not? 18But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, 'Why are you testing me, hypocrites?' 19'Show me the coin for the tax.' And they brought him a denarius. 20And he said to them, 'Whose image is this, and whose inscription?' 21They said , 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Repay, then, to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.' 22When they heard it, they were amazed, and leaving him, they went away.
