Matthew 16:1-12 — Sign of Jonah; Leaven of the Pharisees

Matt.16.1-12

¹Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ²But he answered them, "When evening comes, you say, 'Fair weather, for the sky is red.' ³And in the morning, 'Today there will be stormy weather, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times? ⁴“An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah .” And leaving them, he went away. ⁵When the disciples came to the other side, they forgot to take bread. ⁶Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ⁷And they were discussing it among themselves, saying, “It is because we brought no bread.” ⁸But Jesus, knowing this, said, “Why are you discussing among yourselves, you of little faith, because you have no bread?” ⁹Do you still not understand, or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? ¹⁰Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many large baskets you gathered? ¹¹How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." ¹²Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
