Acts 4:1-22 — Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
Acts.4.1-22
1While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple guard, and the Sadducees came up to them. 2greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3They laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, 6along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. 7After setting them in the midst, they began asking, “By what power or in what name did you do this?” 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well , 10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands before you well. 11This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." 13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed, and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against it. 15But after ordering them to go outside the council, they conferred with one another, 16"What shall we do with these men? For indeed an evident sign has happened through them, plain to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17But so that it may not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name." 18So they called them and ordered them not to speak at all or teach in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves. 20For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard." 21So after threatening them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, since they were all glorifying God for what had happened. 22For the man on whom this sign of healing had happened was more than forty years old.
