Acts 21:37-22:21 — Paul Speaks to the Crowd
Acts.21.37-22.21
37As they were about to bring Paul into the barracks, he said to the commander, “May I say something to you?” He replied, "Do you know Greek? 38Aren't you then the Egyptian who recently stirred up a rebellion and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?" 39But Paul said, “I am a Jewish man from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of an important city. I beg you, permit me to speak to the people.” 40When he had given permission, Paul stood on the stairs and motioned with his hand to the people. When a great silence fell, he addressed them in the Hebrew language , saying:
Chapter 22
1“Men, brothers, and fathers, listen now to my defense before you.” 2When they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. Then he said: 3"I am a Jewish man, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strictness of our ancestral law, being zealous for God just as all of you are today. 4I persecuted this Way even to the death, binding and delivering both men and women into prisons, 5as also the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. I even received letters from them to the brothers, and I was traveling to Damascus to bring those who were there as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. 6"But as I was traveling and drawing near to Damascus, about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven flashed around me. 7I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' 8And I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.' 9Now those who were with me beheld the light , but they did not understand the voice of the one speaking to me. 10And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about all the things that have been appointed for you to do.' 11And since I could not see because of the glory of that light, I was led by the hand by my companions and came into Damascus. 12"Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, who was well spoken of by all the Jews living there, 13came to me, and standing beside me, he said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very hour I looked up and saw him. 14Then he said, 'The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth. 15For you will be a witness for him to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16And now why do you delay? Get up, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name .' 17"Later, when I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance 18and saw him saying to me, 'Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.' 19And I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I was imprisoning and beating those who believe in you. 20And when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I myself was standing by, consenting , and guarding the garments of those who were killing him.' 21And he said to me, 'Go, because I will send you out far away to the Gentiles.'"
