Acts 11:19-30 — The Church in Antioch

Acts.11.19-30

¹⁹Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews alone. ²⁰But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, upon coming to Antioch, began speaking also to the Greeks , preaching the good news of the Lord Jesus. ²¹And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. ²²The report concerning them was heard by the church that was in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch . ²³When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with firm purpose of heart; ²⁴for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a considerable crowd was added to the Lord. ²⁵Then Barnabas went off to Tarsus to search for Saul, ²⁶and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it came about that for a whole year they met with the church and taught a considerable crowd, and that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. ²⁷Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. ²⁸And one of them named Agabus stood up and indicated by the Spirit that a great famine was about to come upon the whole inhabited world; which took place under Claudius . ²⁹So the disciples determined, each of them according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea; ³⁰this they also did, sending it to the elders through Barnabas and Saul.
