Acts 22:30-23:11 — Paul Before the Sanhedrin
Acts.22.30-23.11
30But on the next day, wanting to know the certain truth as to why he was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Council to assemble, and bringing Paul down, he stood him before them.
Chapter 23
1And looking intently at the Council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have conducted my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.” 2But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near him to strike him on the mouth. 3Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! And do you sit judging me according to the law, and in violation of the law you order me to be struck?” 4Those standing nearby said, “Do you insult the high priest of God?” 5And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was high priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'” 6But Paul, knowing that the one part was of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, cried out in the Council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am being judged concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead.” 7And as he was saying this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees , and the assembly was divided. 8For Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but Pharisees acknowledge them all. 9And a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' part stood up and contended fiercely, saying, “We find nothing wrong in this man; but what if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” 10And as a great dissension was developing, the commander, fearing that Paul might be torn to pieces by them, ordered the troops, going down, to take him by force from their midst and bring him into the barracks. 11On the following night, the Lord stood near him and said, “Take courage! For as you have testified about the things concerning me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.” Translation Notes
