Isaiah 66:1-24 — Judgment and Hope
Isa.66.1-24
1Thus says Yahweh: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool . What is this house that you would build for me, and what is this place of my rest? 2For all these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be,“ declares Yahweh. ”But to this one I will look: to him who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who trembles at my word. 3He who slaughters an ox is like one who strikes down a man; he who sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog's neck; he who offers a grain offering is like one who offers pig's blood; he who burns frankincense as a memorial is like one who blesses an idol. Just as they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations, 4so I also will choose their harsh punishments, and I will bring their fears upon them; because I called, and there was no one answering; I spoke, and they did not listen; but they did what was evil in my eyes, and they chose that in which I did not delight." 5Hear the word of Yahweh, you who tremble at his word: "Your brothers who hate you, who exclude you for my name's sake, have said, 'Let Yahweh be glorified, that we may see your joy!' But they are the ones who will be put to shame. 6A voice of uproar from the city! A voice from the temple ! The voice of Yahweh, repaying his enemies what they deserve! 7"Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before her pain came upon her, she delivered a male child. 8Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Can a land be brought forth in one day? Or can a nation be born at once? Yet as soon as Zion was in labor, she also gave birth to her children. 9Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?“ says Yahweh. ”Or shall I who cause to bring forth shut the womb?" says your God. 10"Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her! Rejoice greatly with her, all you who mourn over her, 11so that you may nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breast; so that you may drink deeply and delight yourselves from her glorious abundance." 12For thus says Yahweh: "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you will nurse, you will be carried on her hip, and bounced upon her knees. 13As a man whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; and you will be comforted in Jerusalem." 14You will see, and your heart will rejoice, and your bones will flourish like the green grass; and the hand of Yahweh will be made known to his servants, and he will show his indignation against his enemies. 15For behold, Yahweh will come in fire, and his chariots will be like the whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. 16For by fire and by his sword Yahweh will execute judgment on all flesh, and the slain of Yahweh will be many. 17“Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating the flesh of pigs and abominable things and mice, will come to an end together,” declares Yahweh. 18"For I know their works and their thoughts. The time is coming to gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory. 19I will set a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations—to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory; and they will declare my glory among the nations. 20And they will bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to Yahweh, on horses, and in chariots, and in covered wagons, and on mules, and on camels, to my holy mountain Jerusalem,“ says Yahweh, ”just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of Yahweh. 21And I will also take some of them for priests and for Levites," says Yahweh. 22“For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I am making, will endure before me,” declares Yahweh, "so your offspring and your name will endure. 23And it will happen that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh will come to bow down before me," says Yahweh. 24“And they will go out and look upon the corpses of the men who have rebelled against me; for their worm will not die, and their fire will not be quenched, and they will be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
