Isaiah 34:1-17 — Judgment Against the Nations
Isa.34.1-17
1Come near, you nations, to hear, and pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that fills it; the world, and all that springs from it. 2For Yahweh is angry against all the nations, and furious against all their armies. He has devoted them to destruction; He has given them over to slaughter. 3Their slain will be cast out, and the stench of their corpses will rise; the mountains will melt with their blood. 4All the host of heaven will dissolve, and the skies will be rolled up like a scroll; all their starry host will fall, as a leaf falls from a vine, and like a withered fig from a fig tree. 5For My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it will descend upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction, for judgment. 6The sword of Yahweh is filled with blood; it is gorged with fat—with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. 7The wild oxen will fall with them, and the young bulls with the mighty bulls. Their land will be drenched with blood, and their dust made greasy with fat. 8For Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. 9Her streams will be turned into pitch, and her dust into sulfur; her land will become burning pitch. 10Night and day it will not be quenched; its smoke will ascend forever. From generation to generation it will lie desolate; no one will pass through it forever and ever. 11But the desert owl and the screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch over it the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of emptiness. 12As for her nobles, there will be no kingdom there for them to proclaim, and all her princes will come to nothing. 13Thorns will grow up in her palaces, nettles and thistles in her fortresses. She will become a haunt for jackals, an abode for ostriches. 14The desert creatures will meet with the hyenas, and the wild goat will call to its companion. Yes, the night creature will settle there and find for herself a place of rest. 15There the owl will make her nest and lay eggs; she will hatch them and gather her brood under her shadow. Yes, the birds of prey will be gathered there, every one with its mate. 16Search in the scroll of Yahweh , and read: Not one of these will be missing; not one will lack her mate. For His mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them. 17He has cast the lot for them, and His hand has apportioned it to them with a measuring line. They will possess it forever; from generation to generation they will dwell in it.
