Isaiah 26:1-21 — A Song of Praise
Isa.26.1-21
1In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: "We have a strong city; he appoints salvation as walls and ramparts. 2Open the gates, so that a righteous nation may enter, one that keeps faith. 3You will keep the steadfast of mind in peace, peace, because he trusts in you. 4Trust in the LORD forever, for in Yah, the LORD, is an everlasting Rock. 5For he has brought low the inhabitants of the height, the lofty city. He lays it low, he lays it low to the earth; he brings it down to the dust. 6The foot tramples it, the feet of the afflicted, the steps of the poor." 7The path for the righteous is level; O Upright One, you make the way of the righteous smooth. 8Yes, in the path of your judgments, O LORD, we wait for you; your name and your remembrance are the desire of our soul. 9My soul longs for you in the night; yes, my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. 10If favor is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness he acts unjustly, and he does not see the majesty of the LORD. 11O LORD, your hand is lifted up , but they do not see it . They will see your zeal for the people and be put to shame; yes, the fire for your adversaries will consume them. 12O LORD, you will ordain peace for us, for indeed you have done all our works for us. 13O LORD our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but by you alone do we invoke your name. 14The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise. Therefore you have punished and destroyed them, and you have wiped out all memory of them. 15You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation. You are glorified; you have extended all the borders of the land. 16O LORD, in distress they sought you; they poured out a whispered prayer when your discipline was upon them. 17Like a pregnant woman who draws near to giving birth, who writhes and cries out in her pangs, so we have been in your presence, O LORD. 18We were pregnant, we writhed in pain, but we gave birth, as it were, only to wind. We have not accomplished salvation for the earth, nor have the inhabitants of the world fallen. 19Your dead shall live; my dead bodies shall rise. Awake and sing for joy, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the departed spirits. 20Go, my people, enter your rooms, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little moment, until the wrath has passed. 21For behold, the LORD is coming out from his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. And the earth will disclose her blood , and will no longer cover her slain.
