Isaiah 59:1-21 — Sin, Confession, and Redemption

Isa.59.1-21

¹Behold, Yahweh's hand is not shortened , that it cannot save, nor is his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. ²But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he does not hear. ³For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue mutters wickedness. ⁴No one calls out in righteousness, and no one pleads in truth. They trust in emptiness and speak worthlessness; they conceive trouble and give birth to iniquity. ⁵They hatch vipers' eggs and weave the spider's web. He who eats of their eggs will die, and if one is crushed, a viper breaks out. ⁶Their webs will not become garments, nor will they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and the deed of violence is in their hands. ⁷Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways. ⁸The way of peace they do not know, and there is no justice in their tracks. They have made their paths crooked; whoever treads on them does not know peace. ⁹Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us. We hope for light, and behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom. ¹⁰We grope along the wall like the blind, and we grope like those who have no eyes. We stumble at midday as in the twilight; among the vigorous we are like dead men. ¹¹We all growl like bears, and we moan bitterly like doves. We hope for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us. ¹²For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them: ¹³transgressing and denying Yahweh, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering words of falsehood from the heart. ¹⁴And justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public square, and uprightness cannot enter. ¹⁵Yes, truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. And Yahweh saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. ¹⁶He saw that there was no man, and he was appalled that there was no one to intercede; therefore his own arm brought salvation for him, and his righteousness sustained him. ¹⁷He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head; he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself with zeal as a cloak. ¹⁸According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay: wrath to his adversaries, retribution to his enemies; to the coastlands he will repay retribution. ¹⁹So they shall fear the name of Yahweh from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the breath of Yahweh drives. ²⁰“And a Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” declares Yahweh. ²¹“As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says Yahweh: “My Spirit who is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth , shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring's offspring,” says Yahweh, “from now on and forever.”
