Isaiah 17:1-14 — Prophecy Against Damascus
Isa.17.1-14
1An oracle concerning Damascus: "Behold, Damascus is removed from being a city, and it will become a heap of ruins. 2The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks, which will lie down, and no one will make them afraid. 3The fortress will cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the children of Israel," declares the LORD of Hosts. 4"In that day the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fatness of his flesh will become lean. 5It will be as when the harvester gathers the standing grain, and his arm reaps the ears of grain; yes, it will be as when one gleans ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim. 6Yet gleanings will remain in it, as at the beating of an olive tree: two or three berries at the top of the uppermost bough, four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree," declares the LORD, the God of Israel. 7In that day a man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will gaze upon the Holy One of Israel. 8He will not look to the altars , the work of his hands, and he will not gaze upon what his fingers have made, neither the Asherim nor the incense altars . 9In that day his strong cities will be like the forsaken places of the thicket and the uppermost bough, which they forsook before the children of Israel; and it will be a desolation. 10For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and you have not remembered the Rock of your refuge; therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set out foreign vine slips. 11In the day you plant them, you carefully fence them in, and in the morning you make your seed blossom; but the harvest will vanish in a day of disease and incurable pain. 12Ah, the uproar of many peoples, who roar like the roaring of the seas, and the rushing of nations, who rush like the rushing of mighty waters! 13The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; but He will rebuke them, and they will flee far away, chased like chaff on the mountains before the wind, and like a tumbleweed before a storm. 14At evening time, behold, terror! Before morning, they are no more. This is the portion of those who loot us , and the lot of those who plunder us.
