Ezekiel 8:1-9:11 — Idolatry in the Temple
Ezek.8.1-9.11
1It came about in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, that the hand of the Lord Yahweh fell upon me there. 2Then I looked, and behold, a likeness like the appearance of fire; from the appearance of his waist and downward, fire; and from his waist and upward, like the appearance of brightness, like the gleam of glowing metal. 3He stretched out the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy, was located. 4And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance that I had seen in the valley. 5Then He said to me, 'Son of man, lift up your eyes now toward the north.' So I lifted up my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this idol of jealousy at the entrance. 6And He said to me, 'Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel is committing here, to drive Me far from My sanctuary? But you will see still greater abominations.' 7Then He brought me to the entrance of the court, and I looked, and behold, a hole in the wall. 8And He said to me, 'Son of man, dig now through the wall.' So I dug through the wall, and behold, an entrance. 9Then He said to me, 'Go in and see the wicked abominations that they are committing here.' 10So I went in and looked, and behold, every form of creeping thing and detestable beast, and all the idols of the house of Israel, were engraved on the wall all around. 11And seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, were standing before them. Each man had his censer in his hand, and the fragrance of the cloud of incense was ascending. 12Then He said to me, 'Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the room of his carved images? For they are saying, “Yahweh does not see us; Yahweh has forsaken the land.”' 13And He said to me, 'You will see still greater abominations that they are committing.' 14Then He brought me to the entrance of the gate of the house of Yahweh which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz . 15And He said to me, 'Do you see this, Son of man? You will see still greater abominations than these.' 16So He brought me into the inner court of the house of Yahweh, and behold, at the entrance of the temple of Yahweh, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east; and they were bowing down toward the east to the sun. 17Then He said to me, 'Do you see this, Son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have committed here, that they have filled the land with violence and provoked Me to anger again? And behold, they are putting the branch to their nose !' 18Therefore I indeed will act in wrath. My eye will not show pity, nor will I spare; and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, I will not listen to them.
Chapter 9
1Then He cried out in my ears with a loud voice, saying, 'Draw near, you executioners of the city, each man with his weapon of destruction in his hand.' 2And behold, six men were coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each man with his shattering weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed in linen, with a writer's writing case at his waist. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar. 3Then the glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub on which it rested, to the threshold of the house. And He called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writer's writing case at his waist. 4And Yahweh said to him, 'Pass through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in its midst.' 5But to the others He said in my hearing, 'Pass through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye show pity, and do not spare. 6Old men, young men, virgins, little children, and women, you shall kill to utter destruction; but do not come near any man on whom is the mark. And you shall begin at My sanctuary.' So they began with the elders who were before the house. 7Then He said to them, 'Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!' So they went out and struck down people in the city. 8And it came about, as they were striking them down and I was left alone, that I fell on my face and cried out, and said, 'Ah, Lord Yahweh! Are You destroying the entire remnant of Israel by pouring out Your wrath on Jerusalem?' 9Then He said to me, 'The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is filled with blood, and the city is full of perversion; for they say, “Yahweh has forsaken the land, and Yahweh does not see.”' 10But as for Me, My eye will not show pity, nor will I spare; I will bring their way down upon their own heads. 11And behold, the man clothed in linen , who had the writing case at his waist, brought back word, saying, 'I have done just as You commanded me.'
