Ezekiel 31:1-18 — Egypt as a Great Cedar
Ezek.31.1-18
1In the eleventh year , in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 2“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: ‘Whom are you like in your greatness? 3Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches and a forest-like shade, and high in stature; and its treetop was among the thick boughs. 4The waters made it grow; the deep made it tall, making its rivers flow all around its planting place, and sending its channels to all the trees of the field. 5Therefore its stature was higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long because of the abundant waters as it spread them out. 6In its branches all the birds of the heavens nested, and under its boughs all the beasts of the field gave birth, and in its shade all the great nations lived. 7It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches, for its roots extended to abundant waters. 8The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the cypress trees did not compare with its branches, and the plane trees were not like its boughs. No tree in the garden of God compared with it in its beauty. 9I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches, so that all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God, envied it.’ 10“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because it became high in stature, and set its treetop among the thick boughs , and its heart became proud in its height, 11I handed it over into the hand of the ruler of the nations; he will surely deal with it. According to its wickedness I have driven it out. 12Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and abandoned it. Its branches fell on the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs were broken in all the ravines of the land. And all the peoples of the earth went down from its shade and abandoned it. 13Upon its fallen trunk all the birds of the heavens will dwell, and upon its boughs will be all the beasts of the field, 14in order that no trees by the waters may become high in their stature, nor set their treetop among the thick boughs, and that no well-watered trees may rival them in their height. For they are all handed over to death, to the depths of the earth, among the children of men, with those who go down to the pit.’ 15“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘On the day it went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I covered the deep for it, and I restrained its rivers, and the abundant waters were held back. I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, when I brought it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were comforted in the depths of the earth. 17They also went down to Sheol with it, to those slain by the sword, along with its allies who lived in its shade among the nations. 18“‘Whom are you like in this way, in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the depths of the earth; you will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”
