Ezekiel 16:1-63Jerusalem's Unfaithfulness

Ezek.16.1-63
1And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2"Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations, 3and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. 4As for your birth, on the day you were born your umbilical cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt at all, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths at all. 5No eye looked with pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out into the open field, because your life was loathed on the day you were born. 6“'And I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, and I said to you in your blood, ”Live!“ Yes, I said to you in your blood, ”Live!" 7I made you flourish like a plant of the field, and you grew up and became tall and arrived at full adornment. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, yet you were naked and bare. 8"'Then I passed by you and looked at you, and behold, your time was the time of love; so I spread my skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord GOD, and you became mine. 9Then I bathed you with water, washed away your blood from you, and anointed you with oil. 10I clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of fine leather on you; I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk. 11I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain around your neck. 12I put a ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. 13Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. 14Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through my splendor which I had bestowed upon you, declares the Lord GOD. 15"'But you trusted in your beauty and played the prostitute because of your fame, and you poured out your acts of prostitution on everyone who passed by; it was his. 16You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful high places, and you played the prostitute on them—such things should not come to pass, nor should they happen. 17You also took your beautiful jewelry made of my gold and my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images, and you played the prostitute with them. 18You took your embroidered garments and covered them, and you set my oil and my incense before them. 19My bread also, which I gave you—fine flour, oil, and honey with which I fed you—you set before them as a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord GOD. 20"'Furthermore, you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and you sacrificed them to these images to be devoured. Were your acts of prostitution a small matter, 21that you slaughtered my children and delivered them up by causing them to pass through the fire for them? 22And in all your abominations and your acts of prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood. 23"'And it came about after all your wickedness—Woe, woe to you! declares the Lord GOD— 24that you built for yourself a vaulted shrine and made for yourself a lofty place in every public square. 25At the head of every street you built your lofty place and degraded your beauty; you spread your legs to everyone who passed by and multiplied your acts of prostitution. 26You also played the prostitute with the Egyptians, your neighbors, who are well-endowed , and you multiplied your acts of prostitution to provoke me to anger. 27Behold, therefore, I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your allotted portion, and I handed you over to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd conduct. 28You played the prostitute with the Assyrians because you were not satisfied; you played the prostitute with them and still were not satisfied. 29You multiplied your acts of prostitution to the land of merchants, Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied. 30"'How weak is your heart, declares the Lord GOD, seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute! 31When you built your vaulted shrine at the head of every street and made your lofty place in every public square, you were not like a prostitute, in that you scorned payment. 32You adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband! 33Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, and you bribed them to come to you from all around for your acts of prostitution. 34So you are the opposite of other women in your acts of prostitution: no one solicited you to play the prostitute, and you paid a fee while no fee was paid to you; thus you are the opposite. 35"'Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the LORD: 36Thus says the Lord GOD: Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your acts of prostitution with your lovers and with all the idols of your abominations, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, 37therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you found pleasure, all those you loved along with all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and uncover your nakedness to them, so that they may see all your nakedness. 38I will judge you as women who commit adultery and shed blood are judged, and I will bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. 39I will hand you over to them, and they will tear down your vaulted shrine and demolish your lofty places; they will strip you of your garments, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare. 40They will bring up an assembly against you, and they will stone you with stones and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41They will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. I will make you stop playing the prostitute, and you will no longer pay a fee. 42So I will satisfy my wrath on you, and my jealousy will depart from you; I will be calm and will no longer be angry. 43Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but enraged me with all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your conduct down upon your head, declares the Lord GOD. Have you not committed this lewdness on top of all your abominations? 44“'Behold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ”Like mother, like daughter." 45You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. 46Your older sister is Samaria, who lives with her daughters to your left ; and your younger sister, who lives to your right , is Sodom with her daughters. 47Yet you did not merely walk in their ways or commit their abominations; in a very short time, you acted more corruptly than they in all your ways. 48As I live, declares the Lord GOD, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. 49Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, abundance of food, and prosperous ease, but she did not support the hand of the poor and needy. 50They were haughty and committed abominations before me, so I removed them when I saw it. 51Samaria did not commit half of your sins; you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and you have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations you have committed. 52You also, bear your disgrace, since you have provided justification for your sisters; because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more righteous than you. So you too, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous. 53"'I will restore their fortunes—the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters—and I will restore your fortunes among them, 54so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all that you have done, becoming a comfort to them. 55As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters will return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters will return to their former state; and you and your daughters will return to your former state. 56Was not your sister Sodom a byword in your mouth in the day of your pride, 57before your wickedness was uncovered, as it was at the time of the reproach of the daughters of Aram and all those around her, and of the daughters of the Philistines—those all around who despise you. 58You must bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, declares the LORD. 59"'For thus says the Lord GOD: I will deal with you just as you have done, you who despised the oath by breaking the covenant. 60Yet I myself will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. 61Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both those older than you and those younger than you; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of your covenant. 62I myself will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD, 63so that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again to speak because of your disgrace, when I make atonement for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord GOD.'
