Ezekiel 38:1-39:29 — Prophecy Against Gog
Ezek.38.1-39.29
1And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. 3And say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out with all your army—horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great company with shield and buckler, all of them wielding swords. 5Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6Gomer and all its troops, Beth-togarmah from the farthest north and all its troops—many peoples are with you. 7Be prepared, and prepare yourself, you and all your company gathered around you, and be a guard for them. 8After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will come to a land restored from the sword, gathered from many peoples, upon the mountains of Israel that had long been a waste. Its people were brought out from the nations, and all of them dwell securely. 9You will come up; you will come like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land—you and all your troops and many peoples with you. 10Thus says the Lord GOD: On that day thoughts will arise in your heart, and you will devise an evil plan. 11You will say, 'I will go up against a land of unwalled villages. I will come against those who are quiet, who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls and having neither bars nor gates.' 12You will do this to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against places once wasted but now inhabited, and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and possessions and dwell at the center of the earth. 13Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its young lions will say to you, 'Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your company to carry away silver and gold, to take livestock and possessions, to seize great spoil?' 14Therefore prophesy, Son of man, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord GOD: In that day, when my people Israel dwell securely, will you not know it? 15You will come from your place out of the farthest north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding horses—a great company and a mighty army. 16You will come up against my people Israel like a cloud covering the land. In the latter days it will happen that I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I show myself holy in you before their eyes, Gog. 17Thus says the Lord GOD: Are you the one of whom I spoke in former days through my servants the prophets of Israel, who in those days prophesied for years that I would bring you against them? 18And it will happen in that day, in the day Gog comes against the land of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, that my wrath will rise up in my anger. 19For in my jealousy and in the fire of my fury I have spoken: surely in that day there will be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. 20The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, every creeping thing that creeps on the ground, and every human being on the face of the earth will quake before me. The mountains will be thrown down, the cliffs will fall, and every wall will fall to the ground. 21And I will call for a sword against him on all my mountains, declares the Lord GOD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22I will enter into judgment with him by pestilence and bloodshed. I will rain upon him and upon his troops and upon the many peoples with him torrents of rain, hailstones, fire, and sulfur. 23I will magnify myself and show myself holy and make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
Chapter 39
1And you, Son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 2I will turn you around and lead you on, and I will bring you up from the farthest north and bring you against the mountains of Israel. 3Then I will strike your bow from your left hand and cause your arrows to fall from your right hand. 4On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you. I will give you for food to every kind of bird of prey and to the beasts of the field. 5You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD. 6I will send fire on Magog and on those who dwell securely in the coastlands, and they will know that I am the LORD. 7My holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will no longer let my holy name be profaned. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel. 8Behold, it is coming, and it will happen, declares the Lord GOD. This is the day of which I have spoken. 9Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and make fires of the weapons and burn them—the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the clubs and spears—and they will make fires with them for seven years. 10They will not carry wood from the field or cut it from the forests, for they will make fires with the weapons. They will plunder those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Lord GOD. 11And it will happen in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the Valley of the Travelers east of the sea. It will block those who pass through, and there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon-gog . 12For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land. 13All the people of the land will bury them, and it will bring them renown on the day when I glorify myself, declares the Lord GOD. 14They will set apart men continually employed to pass through the land, burying with the help of passersby those who remain on the face of the land, so as to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will begin their search. 15As they pass through the land, if anyone sees a human bone, he will set up a marker beside it, until the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon-gog. 16And the name of the city will also be Hamonah. So they will cleanse the land. 17And you, Son of man, thus says the Lord GOD: Say to every bird of every kind and to every beast of the field, 'Gather yourselves and come. Assemble from every side to my sacrifice that I am preparing for you, a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat flesh and drink blood.' 18You shall eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls, all of them fattened beasts of Bashan. 19You shall eat fat until you are full and drink blood until you are drunk, from my sacrifice that I have prepared for you. 20And you shall be filled at my table with horse and chariot, with mighty men and every man of war, declares the Lord GOD. 21I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see my judgment that I have executed and my hand that I have laid upon them. 22From that day onward the house of Israel will know that I am the LORD their God. 23And the nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their iniquity, because they acted unfaithfully against me. So I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. 24According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I dealt with them, and I hid my face from them. 25Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and I will have compassion on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name. 26They will bear their shame and all their unfaithfulness by which they were unfaithful to me, when they dwell securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. 27When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, I will show myself holy in them in the sight of many nations. 28Then they will know that I am the LORD their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then gathered them to their own land. I will leave none of them there any longer. 29And I will no longer hide my face from them, because I have poured out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord GOD. Translation Notes
