Ezekiel 30:1-26 — A Lament for Egypt

Ezek.30.1-26

¹The word of Yahweh came to me, saying, ²Son of man, prophesy and say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Wail: Alas for the day!' ³For the day is near; yes, the day of Yahweh is near. It will be a day of clouds, a time for the nations. ⁴A sword will come upon Egypt, and there will be anguish in Cush when the slain fall in Egypt, when they carry away her multitude, and her foundations are torn down. ⁵Cush, Put, Lud, all the mixed people, Kub, and the people of the covenant land will fall with them by the sword. ⁶Thus says Yahweh: Those who uphold Egypt will fall, and the pride of her strength will come down. From Migdol to Syene they will fall in her by the sword, declares the Lord Yahweh. ⁷They will be desolate in the midst of desolate lands, and her cities will be in the midst of ruined cities. ⁸Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I set fire to Egypt and all her helpers are shattered. ⁹On that day messengers will go out from before me in ships to terrify complacent Cush, and anguish will come upon them on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming. ¹⁰Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will put an end to the multitude of Egypt by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon. ¹¹He and his people with him, the ruthless of the nations, will be brought in to destroy the land. They will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain. ¹²I will make the channels dry, and I will sell the land into the hand of evil men. By the hand of foreigners I will lay waste the land and all that fills it. I, Yahweh, have spoken. ¹³Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will destroy the idols and put an end to the images from Noph . No longer shall there be a prince from the land of Egypt, and I will put fear in the land of Egypt. ¹⁴I will make Pathros desolate, set fire to Zoan, and execute judgments on No. ¹⁵I will pour out my wrath on Sin, the stronghold of Egypt, and I will cut off the multitude of No. ¹⁶I will set fire to Egypt. Sin will writhe in anguish, No will be split open, and Noph will have enemies by day. ¹⁷The young men of Aven and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword, and the cities themselves will go into captivity. ¹⁸In Tehaphnehes the day will grow dark, when I break there the yoke-bars of Egypt, and the pride of her strength will cease in her. A cloud will cover her, and her daughters will go into captivity. ¹⁹Thus I will execute judgments on Egypt, and then they will know that I am Yahweh. ²⁰In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, ²¹Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, it has not been bound up for healing, with a bandage applied to bind it and make it strong enough to grasp the sword. ²²Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and I will break his arms, both the strong one and the broken one, and I will make the sword fall from his hand. ²³I will disperse Egypt among the nations and scatter them through the lands. ²⁴I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword into his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him with the groanings of a mortally wounded man. ²⁵I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt. ²⁶I will disperse Egypt among the nations and scatter them through the lands. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
