Ezekiel 1:1-28 — The Vision of God's Glory

Ezek.1.1-28

¹Now it came about in the thirtieth year , in the fourth month , on the fifth day of the month, while I was among the exiles by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. ²On the fifth day of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin— ³the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar, and the hand of the LORD was upon him there. ⁴I looked, and behold, a stormy wind came from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth, and a brightness around it, and from its midst, from the midst of the fire, something like the gleam of glowing metal. ⁵And from its midst came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. ⁶Each one had four faces, and each of them had four wings. ⁷Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot, and they sparkled like the gleam of burnished bronze. ⁸Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them: ⁹their wings touched one another; they did not turn as they moved; each one went straight forward. ¹⁰As for the likeness of their faces, each of the four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion on the right side, and the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle. ¹¹And their faces and their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings touching another, and two covering their bodies. ¹²Each one went straight forward; wherever the spirit would go, they would go; they did not turn as they moved. ¹³As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving back and forth among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and lightning flashed out of the fire. ¹⁴And the living creatures darted back and forth like the appearance of a flash of lightning. ¹⁵Now as I looked at the living creatures, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, for each of its four faces. ¹⁶The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like the gleam of beryl, and the four of them had the same likeness. Their appearance and their workmanship was as though a wheel were within a wheel. ¹⁷When they moved, they went in any of their four directions; they did not turn as they moved. ¹⁸As for their rims, they were high and awesome, and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around. ¹⁹When the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose. ²⁰Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise alongside them, for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. ²¹When those moved, these moved; and when those stood still, these stood still; and when those rose from the earth, the wheels rose alongside them, for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. ²²Over the heads of the living creature there was the likeness of an expanse, like the gleam of awesome crystal, stretched out over their heads above. ²³Under the expanse their wings were straight, one toward another. Each had two wings covering its body on this side, and each had two wings covering its body on that side. ²⁴When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp. When they stood still, they let down their wings. ²⁵And there came a voice from above the expanse that was over their heads; when they stood still, they let down their wings. ²⁶Above the expanse that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, like the appearance of a sapphire stone, and upon the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man on it high above. ²⁷Then I saw something like the gleam of glowing metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around within it, from the appearance of his waist and upward; and from the appearance of his waist and downward I saw something like the appearance of fire, and there was a brightness around him. ²⁸Like the appearance of the rainbow that is in the cloud on a day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
