Ezekiel 40:1-42:20The New Temple

Ezek.40.1-42.20
1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck down, on that very day the hand of YHWH was upon me , and he brought me there. 2In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, and on it, to the south, was something like the structure of a city. 3He brought me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord in his hand and a measuring reed, standing in the gate. 4The man said to me, “Son of man, look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and set your heart on everything that I am about to show you, for you were brought here so that I might show it to you. Declare to the house of Israel all that you see.” 5And behold, there was a wall outside the temple all around, and in the man's hand was a measuring reed of six cubits, each cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth . He measured the thickness of the structure: one reed; and the height: one reed. 6Then he came to the gate that faced east and went up its steps. He measured the threshold of the gate: one reed wide; and the other threshold: one reed wide. 7Each guardroom was one reed long and one reed wide, and between the guardrooms were five cubits. The threshold of the gate beside the portico of the gate, toward the temple, was one reed. 8He measured the portico of the gate, toward the temple: one reed. 9Then he measured the portico of the gate: eight cubits; and its jambs: two cubits. The portico of the gate faced toward the temple. 10The guardrooms of the east gate were three on one side and three on the other; all three had the same measure, and the jambs on either side also had the same measure. 11He measured the width of the entrance of the gate: ten cubits; and the length of the gate: thirteen cubits. 12There was a barrier before the guardrooms, one cubit on each side, and each guardroom was six cubits on this side and six cubits on that side. 13Then he measured the gate from the roof of one guardroom to the roof of the opposite one: twenty-five cubits in width, doorway facing doorway. 14He made the jambs sixty cubits, and the court extended to the jamb of the gate all around. 15From the front of the entrance gate to the front of the inner portico of the gate was fifty cubits. 16There were recessed windows for the guardrooms and for their jambs, inside the gate all around; so also for the porticos. There were windows all around on the inside, and on each jamb were palm trees. 17Then he brought me into the outer court, and behold, there were chambers and a pavement made all around the court. Thirty chambers were on the pavement. 18The pavement ran along the side of the gates, corresponding to the length of the gates; this was the lower pavement. 19Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the front of the inner court outside: one hundred cubits, on the east and on the north. 20As for the gate that faced north for the outer court, he measured its length and its width. 21Its guardrooms, three on one side and three on the other, and its jambs and its portico were according to the measure of the first gate: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 22Its windows, its portico, and its palm trees were according to the measure of the gate that faced east. They went up to it by seven steps, and its portico was before them. 23A gate to the inner court stood opposite the gate on the north and on the east, and he measured from gate to gate: one hundred cubits. 24Then he led me toward the south, and behold, there was a gate toward the south. He measured its jambs and its portico according to these same measures. 25There were windows in it and in its porticos all around, like those windows. Its length was fifty cubits and its width twenty-five cubits. 26Its ascent had seven steps, and its portico was before them. It had palm trees on its jambs, one on this side and one on that side. 27There was a gate to the inner court toward the south, and he measured from gate to gate toward the south: one hundred cubits. 28Then he brought me into the inner court by the south gate, and he measured the south gate according to these same measures. 29Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porticos were according to these same measures, and there were windows in it and in its porticos all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 30There were porticos all around, twenty-five cubits long and five cubits wide. 31Its portico faced the outer court, and palm trees were on its jambs. Its ascent had eight steps. 32Then he brought me to the inner court toward the east, and he measured the gate according to these same measures. 33Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porticos were according to these same measures, and there were windows in it and in its porticos all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 34Its porticos faced the outer court, and palm trees were on its jambs on this side and on that side. Its ascent had eight steps. 35Then he brought me to the north gate and measured it according to these same measures. 36Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porticos, and there were windows in it all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 37Its jambs faced the outer court, and palm trees were on its jambs on this side and on that side. Its ascent had eight steps. 38There was a chamber with its doorway by the jambs of the gates; there they washed the burnt offering. 39In the portico of the gate were two tables on this side and two tables on that side, on which they slaughtered the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering. 40On the outer side, as one goes up to the entrance of the north gate, were two tables; and on the other side, belonging to the portico of the gate, were two tables. 41Four tables were on this side and four tables on that side, by the side of the gate: eight tables on which they slaughtered the sacrifices. 42There were four tables for the burnt offering, of cut stone, a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide, and one cubit high. On them they placed the implements with which they slaughtered the burnt offering and the sacrifice. 43The ledges, one handbreadth wide, were fixed all around inside, and on the tables was the flesh of the offering. 44Outside the inner gate, in the inner court, were chambers for the singers , one at the side of the north gate facing south, and one at the side of the east gate facing north. 45He said to me, “This chamber that faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple.” 46And the chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. They are the sons of Zadok, those from the sons of Levi who come near to YHWH to minister to him. 47He measured the court: one hundred cubits long and one hundred cubits wide, square. The altar was before the temple. 48Then he brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the jambs of the portico: five cubits on this side and five cubits on that side. The width of the gate was three cubits on this side and three cubits on that side. 49The length of the portico was twenty cubits and its breadth eleven cubits, and it was reached by steps going up to it. There were pillars by the jambs, one on this side and one on that side.
Chapter 41
1Then he brought me into the nave and measured the jambs: six cubits wide on this side and six cubits wide on that side, the width of the structure. 2The width of the entrance was ten cubits, and the sidewalls of the entrance were five cubits on this side and five cubits on that side. He measured its length: forty cubits; and the width: twenty cubits. 3Then he went inside and measured the jamb of the entrance: two cubits; and the entrance: six cubits; and the width of the entrance: seven cubits. 4He measured its length: twenty cubits; and its width: twenty cubits, before the nave. Then he said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.” 5Then he measured the wall of the temple: six cubits; and the width of each side chamber: four cubits, all around the temple. 6The side chambers were in three levels, thirty in order. They were attached to the wall that belonged to the temple for the side chambers all around, so that they might be supported, but they were not fastened into the wall of the temple itself. 7The side chambers widened upward from level to level, because the surrounding structure of the temple rose upward all around the temple. Therefore the temple broadened upward, and one went up from the lowest level to the highest through the middle level. 8I also saw that the temple had a raised base all around. The foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six cubits. 9The thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits, and what was left was the open place beside the side chambers of the temple. 10Between the chambers was a width of twenty cubits all around the temple. 11The entrances of the side chambers were toward the open area, one entrance toward the north and one entrance toward the south. The width of the open area was five cubits all around. 12The building that was before the separate area on the west side was seventy cubits wide, and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits. 13Then he measured the temple: one hundred cubits long; and the separate area and the building with its walls: one hundred cubits long. 14The width of the front of the temple and the separate area toward the east was one hundred cubits. 15He measured the length of the building before the separate area that was behind it, and its galleries on this side and on that side: one hundred cubits; also the inner nave and the porticos of the court. 16The thresholds, the recessed windows, and the galleries all around on the three sides opposite the threshold were paneled with wood all around, from the floor up to the windows; and the windows were covered. 17Above the entrance, and as far as the inner temple and outside, and on all the wall all around, inside and outside, were measured areas. 18It was made with cherubim and palm trees, with a palm tree between cherub and cherub; and each cherub had two faces. 19A human face was toward the palm tree on one side, and a young lion's face toward the palm tree on the other side. They were made all around the temple. 20From the floor up to above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were made, and likewise on the wall of the nave. 21The nave had a square doorframe, and the front of the sanctuary had the same appearance. 22The altar was of wood, three cubits high and two cubits long. Its corners, its length, and its sides were of wood. And he said to me, “This is the table that is before YHWH.” 23The nave and the sanctuary each had two doors. 24The doors had two leaves each, two swinging leaves: two leaves for the one door and two leaves for the other. 25Cherubim and palm trees, like those made on the walls, were made on them, on the doors of the nave. And there was a wooden canopy on the front of the portico outside. 26There were recessed windows and palm trees on this side and on that side, on the sides of the portico; so too for the side chambers of the temple and the canopies.
Chapter 42
1Then he brought me out to the outer court by the way toward the north, and he brought me to the chamber block that was opposite the separate area and opposite the building on the north. 2Its length along the north entrance was one hundred cubits, and its width was fifty cubits. 3Opposite the twenty cubits that belonged to the inner court, and opposite the pavement that belonged to the outer court, gallery faced gallery in the third level. 4Before the chambers was an inner walkway ten cubits wide, with a passage one cubit wide; and their doors were toward the north. 5Now the upper chambers were shorter, because the galleries took more space from them than from the lower and the middle chambers in the building. 6For they were in three stories, and they had no pillars like the pillars of the courts. Therefore the upper chambers were set back more than the lower and the middle ones from the ground. 7The wall that was outside, parallel to the chambers, toward the outer court in front of the chambers, was fifty cubits long. 8For the length of the chambers that were along the outer court was fifty cubits, and behold, before the nave it was one hundred cubits. 9Below these chambers was the entrance from the east, as one entered them from the outer court. 10Along the breadth of the wall of the court toward the east, before the separate area and before the building, were chambers. 11The way before them was like the appearance of the chambers that were toward the north: according to their length, so was their width; and all their exits, their arrangements, and their openings were alike. 12And corresponding to the doorways of the chambers that were toward the south was a doorway at the beginning of the way, the way before the wall running eastward, by which one entered them. 13Then he said to me, “The north chambers and the south chambers that are opposite the separate area are holy chambers, where the priests who are near to YHWH shall eat the most holy offerings. There they shall place the most holy offerings, the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering, for the place is holy.” 14When the priests enter, they shall not go out of the holy place into the outer court, but there they shall leave the garments in which they minister, for they are holy. They shall put on other garments, and then approach what belongs to the people. 15When he had finished measuring the inner temple, he brought me out by the way of the gate that faced east, and he measured it all around. 16He measured the east side with the measuring reed: five hundred reeds. 17He measured the north side: five hundred reeds. 18He measured the south side: five hundred reeds. 19He turned to the west side and measured: five hundred reeds. 20He measured it on the four sides. It had a wall all around, five hundred reeds long and five hundred reeds wide, to separate the holy from the common .
