Exodus 22:1-15 — Laws About Property
Exod.22.1-15
1If a thief is found breaking in and is struck and dies, there is no bloodguilt for him. 2But if the sun has risen on him, there is bloodguilt for him. He shall surely make restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 3If what was stolen is indeed found alive in his possession, whether ox or donkey or sheep, he shall make restitution double. 4If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, and lets his animal loose so that it grazes in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard. 5If a fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain or standing grain or the field is consumed, the one who started the fire shall surely make restitution. 6If a man gives his neighbor money or goods to keep, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is found, he shall make restitution double. 7If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall come before God , to determine whether he has not laid his hand on his neighbor's property. 8In every case of breach of trust, whether involving an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any kind of lost property about which someone says, 'This is it,' the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God condemns shall make restitution double to his neighbor. 9If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any kind of animal to keep, and it dies or is injured or is carried off, with no one seeing it, 10an oath of the LORD shall be between the two of them, whether he has not laid his hand on his neighbor's property. Its owner shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution. 11But if it is indeed stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 12If it is indeed torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence; he shall not make restitution for what was torn. 13If a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, while its owner is not with it, he shall surely make restitution. 14If its owner is with it, he shall not make restitution. If it is a hired thing, it is covered by its hire fee. 15If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride price for her to be his wife.
