Exodus 40:1-38 — Setting Up the Tabernacle

Exod.40.1-38

¹Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ²On the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting. ³You shall put the Ark of the testimony there, and you shall screen the Ark with the veil. ⁴You shall bring in the table and arrange what belongs on it. You shall bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. ⁵You shall place the gold altar for incense before the Ark of the testimony, and you shall set the screen for the entrance of the tabernacle. ⁶You shall place the altar of burnt offering before the entrance of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting. ⁷You shall place the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. ⁸You shall set up the court all around, and you shall place the screen for the gate of the court. ⁹You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and you shall consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it shall be holy. ¹⁰You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and you shall consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. ¹¹You shall anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate it. ¹²You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and you shall wash them with water. ¹³You shall clothe Aaron with the holy garments, and you shall anoint him and consecrate him, that he may serve me as priest. ¹⁴You shall bring his sons near and clothe them with tunics. ¹⁵You shall anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may serve me as priests. Their anointing shall be for them an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. ¹⁶Moses did according to all that Yahweh had commanded him; so he did. ¹⁷And in the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month, the tabernacle was set up. ¹⁸Moses set up the tabernacle. He placed its bases, set up its boards, inserted its bars, and raised up its pillars. ¹⁹He spread the tent over the tabernacle and placed the covering of the tent over it above, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ²⁰He took the testimony and put it into the Ark, set the poles on the Ark, and placed the mercy seat on the Ark above. ²¹He brought the Ark into the tabernacle, set up the veil of the screen, and screened the Ark of the testimony, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ²²He placed the table in the Tent of Meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil. ²³He arranged the bread on it before Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ²⁴He placed the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle. ²⁵He set up the lamps before Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ²⁶He placed the gold altar in the Tent of Meeting before the veil. ²⁷He burned fragrant incense on it, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ²⁸He set the screen for the entrance of the tabernacle. ²⁹He placed the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting, and he offered on it the burnt offering and the grain offering, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ³⁰He placed the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and he put water in it for washing. ³¹From it Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet. ³²Whenever they entered the Tent of Meeting, and whenever they approached the altar, they washed, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. ³³He set up the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and placed the screen for the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work. ³⁴Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. ³⁵Moses was not able to enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud had settled on it and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. ³⁶Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel would set out throughout all their journeys. ³⁷But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day it was taken up. ³⁸For the cloud of Yahweh was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.
