Exodus 30:1-38 — The Altar of Incense and Other Items

Exod.30.1-38

¹You shall make an altar as a place for burning incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. ²Its length shall be a cubit , and its width a cubit; it shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. ³You shall overlay it with pure gold—its top, its sides all around, and its horns—and you shall make a gold molding all around it. ⁴You shall make two gold rings for it under its molding; on its two opposite sides you shall make them, and they shall serve as holders for poles with which to carry it. ⁵You shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. ⁶You shall put it in front of the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, in front of the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. ⁷Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; every morning when he tends the lamps, he shall burn it. ⁸And when Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, a perpetual incense before Yahweh throughout your generations. ⁹You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering; and you shall not pour a drink offering on it. ¹⁰Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; with the blood of the sin offering of atonement, once a year he shall make atonement on it throughout your generations. It is most holy to Yahweh. ¹¹Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ¹²When you take a census of the Israelites to register them, then each man shall give a ransom for his life to Yahweh when you count them, so that there will be no plague among them when you count them. ¹³This is what everyone who crosses over to those being counted shall give: half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs); half a shekel as an offering to Yahweh. ¹⁴Everyone who crosses over to those being counted, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering to Yahweh. ¹⁵The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering to Yahweh to make atonement for your lives. ¹⁶You shall take the atonement money from the Israelites and give it for the service of the Tent of Meeting, that it may be a memorial for the Israelites before Yahweh, to make atonement for your lives. ¹⁷Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁸You shall make a bronze basin with its bronze stand for washing. You shall put it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. ¹⁹Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it. ²⁰When they enter the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water, so that they do not die ; or when they approach the altar to minister, to burn a food offering to Yahweh. ²¹They shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they do not die. It shall be a perpetual statute for them, for him and for his descendants throughout their generations. ²²Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ²³Take for yourself the finest spices: five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much—two hundred and fifty—of fragrant cinnamon, two hundred and fifty of fragrant cane, ²⁴five hundred of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. ²⁵You shall make it into a holy anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. ²⁶You shall anoint the Tent of Meeting with it, and the ark of the Testimony, ²⁷the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, the altar of incense, ²⁸the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand. ²⁹You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall become holy. ³⁰You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them to minister as priests to me. ³¹You shall speak to the Israelites, saying, 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to me throughout your generations. ³²It shall not be poured on human flesh, and you shall not make anything like it with its same formula. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. ³³Whoever compounds anything like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.' ³⁴Yahweh said to Moses, 'Take for yourself fragrant spices: gum resin, onycha, and galbanum—fragrant spices with pure frankincense; there shall be an equal part of each. ³⁵You shall make it into incense, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. ³⁶You shall grind some of it into fine powder, and put some of it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you. ³⁷The incense which you shall make, you shall not make for yourselves according to its formula; it shall be holy to you for Yahweh. ³⁸Whoever makes anything like it to enjoy its fragrance shall be cut off from his people.'
