Mark 15:16-32 — The Soldiers Mock Jesus; The Crucifixion

Mark.15.16-32

¹⁶Then the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard, that is, the Praetorium, and called together the whole cohort. ¹⁷They dressed him in purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸And they began to salute him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹They kept striking his head with a reed and spitting on him; and kneeling down, they bowed before him. ²⁰When they had mocked him, they stripped off the purple and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. ²¹And they forced a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ²²And they brought him to the place Golgotha, which means, translated, “Place of a Skull.” ²³And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴And they crucified him and divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each would take. ²⁵It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. ²⁶And the inscription stating the charge against him read: “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” ²⁷And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. ²⁹And those who were passing by were hurling abuse at him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, ³⁰save yourself by coming down from the cross." ³¹In the same way the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, were saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. ³²Let the Christ, the King of Israel , come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." And those crucified with him were also insulting him.
