Mark 14:53-72 — Jesus Before the Sanhedrin; Peter Disowns Jesus

Mark.14.53-72

⁵³They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled. ⁵⁴Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. He was sitting with the officers and warming himself by the light of the fire. ⁵⁵Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they were not finding any. ⁵⁶For many were giving false testimony against him, but their testimonies were not consistent. ⁵⁷Then some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, ⁵⁸“We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.'” ⁵⁹Yet even in this their testimony was not consistent. ⁶⁰Then the high priest stood up in the middle and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do you answer nothing? What is it that these men are testifying against you?” ⁶¹But he was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned him and said to him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” ⁶²Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” ⁶³Then the high priest tore his garments and said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? ⁶⁴You have heard the blasphemy. What seems right to you?" And they all condemned him as deserving death. ⁶⁵Then some began to spit on him, to cover his face, to strike him, and to say to him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received him with blows . ⁶⁶While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, ⁶⁷and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Nazarene.” ⁶⁸But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” Then he went out into the entryway . ⁶⁹And the servant girl, seeing him, began again to say to those standing there, “This man is one of them.” ⁷⁰But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there again said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, because you are a Galilean, and your way of speaking matches theirs .” ⁷¹But he began to call down curses and to swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” ⁷²And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word, how Jesus had said to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times .” And he broke down and wept.
