Deuteronomy 2:26-3:11 — Defeat of Sihon and Og
Deut.2.26-3.11
26So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27“Let me pass through your land. I will go only along the road; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28You shall sell me food for silver, that I may eat, and give me water for silver, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29just as the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving us.” 30But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass through his land, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him into your hand, as it is this day. 31And Yahweh said to me, “See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may inherit his land.” 32Then Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Jahaz. 33And Yahweh our God gave him over to us, and we struck him down, along with his sons and all his people. 34We captured all his cities at that time, and we devoted to complete destruction every city—men, women, and children. We left no survivor. 35Only the livestock we took as plunder for ourselves, along with the spoil of the cities that we had captured. 36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the city that is in the valley, even as far as Gilead, there was not a city that was too high for us. Yahweh our God gave everything over to us. 37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near—all along the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God had forbidden.
Chapter 3
1Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 2And Yahweh said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. And you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon.” 3So Yahweh our God gave Og king of Bashan and all his people into our hand as well, and we struck him down until no survivor was left to him. 4We captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these were fortified cities with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many unwalled villages. 6And we devoted them to complete destruction, just as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting to complete destruction every city—men, women, and children. 7But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves. 8So at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon 9(the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10all the cities of the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its width, according to the cubit of a man . Translation Notes
