Deuteronomy 25:1-19 — Various Laws
Deut.25.1-19
1If there is a legal dispute between men, and they come near to the court for judgment, and the judges judge them, they shall acquit the righteous person and condemn the wicked person. 2Then it shall be, if the wicked person is deserving of a beating, the judge shall make him lie down and be beaten in his presence, with the number of lashes according to his guilt. 3He may beat him forty times, but he must not add more; lest, if he adds more to beat him beyond these with many lashes, your brother be degraded in your sight. 4You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain. 5If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband's brother shall go in to her, take her to himself as a wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother for her. 6And it shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel. 7But if the man does not desire to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, 'My husband's brother refuses to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband's brother for me.' 8Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. If he stands firm and says, 'I do not desire to take her,' 9then his brother's wife shall approach him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, spit in his face, and answer and say, 'Thus shall it be done to the man who will not build up his brother's house.' 10And his name shall be called in Israel, 'The house of him who had his sandal removed.' 11If men fight together, a man and his brother, and the wife of one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of the one striking him, and she reaches out her hand and seizes his genitals , 12then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall show no pity. 13You shall not have in your bag differing stone weights , a large one and a small one. 14You shall not have in your house differing ephah measures, a large one and a small one. 15You shall have a full and just stone weight; you shall have a full and just ephah measure, so that your days may be prolonged upon the land that Yahweh your God is giving you. 16For everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly, is an abomination to Yahweh your God. 17Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18how he met you on the way and attacked all the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God. 19Therefore it shall be, when Yahweh your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall wipe out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.
