Deuteronomy 33:1-29 — Moses Blesses the Tribes

Deut.33.1-29

¹This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death. ²He said: 'The LORD came from Sinai, and dawned on them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran, and he came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand for them.' ³Indeed, he loves the peoples; all his holy ones are in your hand. They sit at your feet; each receives your words. ⁴Moses commanded us a law, as a possession for the assembly of Jacob. ⁵He was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people gathered, all the tribes of Israel together. ⁶Let Reuben live and not die, nor let his men be few. ⁷And this he said of Judah: 'Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people. With his hands he contended for himself, and may you be a help against his adversaries.' ⁸And of Levi he said: 'Your Thummim and your Urim belong to your godly one, whom you tested at Massah, with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah;' ⁹who said of his father and mother, 'I have not seen them'; he did not acknowledge his brothers, nor did he know his own children, for they observed your word and kept your covenant. ¹⁰They shall teach Jacob your ordinances, and Israel your law; they shall put incense before you, and whole burnt offerings on your altar. ¹¹Bless his substance, O LORD, and accept the work of his hands; crush the loins of those who rise against him, and of those who hate him, so that they rise no more.' ¹²Of Benjamin he said: 'The beloved of the LORD dwells in safety by him; he shields him all day long, and he dwells between his shoulders.' ¹³And of Joseph he said: 'Blessed by the LORD be his land, with the precious gifts of heaven, with the dew, and with the deep that lies beneath, ¹⁴with the precious gifts of the crops from the sun, and with the precious gifts of the yield of the months, ¹⁵with the finest from the peaks of the ancient mountains, and with the precious gifts of the everlasting hills, ¹⁶with the precious gifts of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of him who dwelt in the bush. Let these come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the crown of the head of the prince among his brothers. ¹⁷His firstborn bull has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall gore the peoples, all of them together, to the ends of the earth. These are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and these are the thousands of Manasseh.' ¹⁸And of Zebulun he said: 'Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and Issachar, in your tents. ¹⁹They shall call the peoples to the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness, for they shall draw from the abundance of the seas, and the hidden treasures of the sand.' ²⁰And of Gad he said: 'Blessed is he who enlarges Gad! He dwells like a lioness, and tears the arm, and even the crown of the head. ²¹He provided the first part for himself, for there the commander's portion was reserved; and he came with the heads of the people. He executed the justice of the LORD, and his ordinances with Israel.' ²²And of Dan he said: 'Dan is a lion's cub, that leaps out of Bashan.' ²³And of Naphtali he said: 'O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, and full of the blessing of the LORD, possess the west and the south.' ²⁴And of Asher he said: 'Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be the favored one among his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil. ²⁵Your bars shall be iron and bronze, and as your days, so shall your strength be.' ²⁶There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, and in his majesty through the skies. ²⁷The eternal God is a dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He drove out the enemy from before you, and said, 'Destroy!' ²⁸So Israel dwells in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and new wine; yes, his heavens drop down dew. ²⁹Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, and the sword of your majesty ! Your enemies shall cower before you, and you shall tread upon their high places.
