Deuteronomy 18:9-22 — Occult Practices Forbidden; The Prophet
Deut.18.9-22
9When you enter the land that Yahweh your God is giving you, you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations. 10There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who practices divination, a soothsayer, an augur, or a sorcerer, 11or one who casts spells, or who consults a medium or a spiritist, or who inquires of the dead. 12For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh, and because of these abominations Yahweh your God is driving them out from before you. 13You shall be blameless before Yahweh your God. 14For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to soothsayers and to diviners; but as for you, Yahweh your God has not permitted you to do so. 15Yahweh your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your midst, from your brothers; to him you shall listen. 16This is according to all that you asked of Yahweh your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear the voice of Yahweh my God again, and let me not see this great fire anymore, so that I do not die.' 17And Yahweh said to me, 'They have spoken well. 18'I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19'And it shall come about that whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will hold him accountable. 20'But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' 21And if you say in your heart, 'How shall we know the word that Yahweh has not spoken?'— 22when a prophet speaks in the name of Yahweh , and the word does not happen or come to pass, that is the word that Yahweh has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it in presumption; you shall not be afraid of him.
