Deuteronomy 27:1-26 — The Altar on Mount Ebal; Curses

Deut.27.1-26

¹Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: "Keep all the commandment that I am commanding you today. ²And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and coat them with lime plaster. ³You shall write on them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land that Yahweh your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, promised you. ⁴And when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up these stones that I am commanding you about today on Mount Ebal, and you shall coat them with lime plaster. ⁵And there you shall build an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones; you shall not use iron on them. ⁶You shall build the altar of Yahweh your God with whole stones , and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to Yahweh your God. ⁷You shall sacrifice peace offerings there and eat, and you shall rejoice before Yahweh your God. ⁸And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very clearly." ⁹Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: "Be silent and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God. ¹⁰Therefore you shall obey the voice of Yahweh your God and do his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today." ¹¹On that day Moses commanded the people: ¹²"These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you cross the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. ¹³And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. ¹⁴The Levites shall declare with a loud voice to every man of Israel: ¹⁵"Cursed is the man who makes a carved image or a cast image, an abomination to Yahweh, the work of a craftsman's hands, and sets it up in secret. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁶Cursed is the one who dishonors his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁷Cursed is the one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁸Cursed is the one who leads a blind man astray on the road. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁹Cursed is the one who perverts the justice due to the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁰Cursed is the one who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's bed . And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²¹Cursed is the one who lies with any animal. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²²Cursed is the one who lies with his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²³Cursed is the one who lies with his mother-in-law. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁴Cursed is the one who strikes his neighbor in secret. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁵Cursed is the one who accepts a bribe to strike down an innocent person. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁶Cursed is the one who does not uphold the words of this law by doing them. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'"
