Deuteronomy 2:1-25 — Wanderings in the Wilderness
Deut.2.1-25
1Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Reed Sea , as the LORD had spoken to me, and we went around Seir for many days. 2And the LORD said to me, 3"You have gone around this hill country long enough. Turn northward. 4Command the people: 'You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the sons of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so be very careful. 5Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough for the sole of a foot to tread on, because I have given Seir to Esau as a possession. 6You shall buy food from them with silver, so that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them with silver, so that you may drink.' 7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has known your journey through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing. 8So we passed on from our brothers, the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the road of the Arabah, from Elath and from Ezion-geber. Then we turned and passed along the road of the wilderness of Moab. 9And the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass Moab, and do not provoke them to battle, for I will not give you any of its land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession. 10(The Emim formerly lived there, a people great and numerous and tall like the Anakim. 11They too were regarded as Rephaim, like the Anakim, but the Moabites called them Emim. 12The Horites also formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, destroyed them from before them, and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land of its possession that the LORD gave to them.) 13"Now set out and cross the wadi Zered.' So we crossed the wadi Zered. 14The time that we traveled from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until all that generation of fighting men had come to an end from the midst of the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. 15Moreover, the hand of the LORD was against them to rout them from the midst of the camp until they were gone. 16So when all the fighting men had finished dying from among the people, 17the LORD spoke to me, 18"Today you are crossing the border of Moab at Ar. 19When you come opposite the sons of Ammon, do not harass them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession. 20(It too is regarded as a land of Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there, but the Ammonites called them Zamzummim, 21a people great and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them from before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22just as he did for the sons of Esau who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place to this day. 23And the Avvim, who lived in settlements as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites who came out from Caphtor destroyed, and they settled in their place.) 24"Set out, march on, and cross the wadi Arnon. See, I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand. Begin to take possession, and engage him in battle. 25This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the peoples under all heaven. When they hear the report of you, they will tremble and writhe because of you."
