Leviticus 17:1-16 — Eating Blood Forbidden
Lev.17.1-16
1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the children of Israel, and say to them: This is the word that the LORD has commanded: 3Any man from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a sheep or a goat in the camp, or slaughters it outside the camp, 4and has not brought it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to present it as an offering to the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD, bloodguilt shall be reckoned to that man; he has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people . 5This is so that the children of Israel may bring the sacrifices that they offer in the open field, and bring them to the LORD at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, to the priest, and sacrifice them as peace offerings to the LORD. 6The priest shall throw the blood against the altar of the LORD at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and shall burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 7They shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat-demons after which they prostitute themselves. This shall be a permanent statute for them throughout their generations. 8And you shall say to them: Any man from the house of Israel, or from the foreigner who sojourns among them, who offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice, 9and does not bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to offer it to the LORD, that man shall be cut off from his people. 10And any man from the house of Israel, or from the foreigner who sojourns among them, who eats any blood—I will set my face against the person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from among his people. 11For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives, for the blood makes atonement by the life . 12Therefore I said to the children of Israel, No one among you shall eat blood, and the foreigner who sojourns among you shall not eat blood. 13And any man from the children of Israel, or from the foreigner who sojourns among them, who hunts down an animal or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth. 14For the life of all flesh is its blood. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Everyone who eats it shall be cut off. 15And every person who eats what died naturally or what was torn by beasts, whether native-born or a foreigner, shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and shall be unclean until evening; then he shall be clean. 16But if he does not wash his clothes and does not wash his body, then he shall bear his guilt.
