Leviticus 11:1-47 — Clean and Unclean Food

Lev.11.1-47

¹The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, ²"Speak to the Israelites, saying: These are the living creatures that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. ³You may eat any animal that has a split hoof, completely divided, and that chews the cud. ⁴But these you shall not eat from those that chew the cud or from those that divide the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean for you. ⁵The rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean for you. ⁶The hare, because it chews the cud but has not divided the hoof, is unclean for you. ⁷And the pig, because it has a split hoof, completely divided, but does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. ⁸You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. ⁹This you may eat from all that are in the waters: everything that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas and in the streams, you may eat. ¹⁰But everything in the seas and in the streams that does not have fins and scales, among all the swarming things of the waters and among every living creature that is in the waters, is detestable to you. ¹¹They shall remain detestable to you: you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall regard their carcasses as detestable. ¹²Everything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you. ¹³And these you shall regard as detestable among the birds; they shall not be eaten, for they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, and the black vulture; ¹⁴the kite and the falcon according to its kind; ¹⁵every raven according to its kind; ¹⁶the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, and the hawk according to its kind; ¹⁷the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl; ¹⁸the white owl, the desert owl, and the osprey; ¹⁹the stork, the heron according to its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. ²⁰Every winged swarming thing that goes on four feet is detestable to you. ²¹Yet these you may eat among all the winged swarming things that go on four feet: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground. ²²Of these you may eat: the locust according to its kind, the bald locust according to its kind, the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind. ²³But every other winged swarming thing that has four feet is detestable to you. ²⁴And by these you shall become unclean: everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until evening. ²⁵And everyone who carries any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. ²⁶Every animal that divides the hoof but does not completely split it, or does not chew the cud, is unclean for you; everyone who touches it shall be unclean. ²⁷And every animal that walks on its paws among all the animals that go on four feet is unclean for you; everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until evening. ²⁸And the one who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean for you. ²⁹And these are unclean for you among the swarming things that swarm on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and the great lizard according to its kind; ³⁰the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon. ³¹These are unclean for you among all the swarming things; everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. ³²And anything on which one of them falls when it is dead shall be unclean, whether any article of wood or garment or skin or sackcloth—any article with which work is done. It shall be put into water and remain unclean until evening; then it shall be clean. ³³And every clay vessel into which one of them falls, everything that is inside it shall be unclean, and you shall break the vessel. ³⁴Any food that may be eaten, if water from such a vessel comes on it, shall be unclean, and any drink that may be drunk in any such vessel shall be unclean. ³⁵And everything on which any of their carcasses falls shall be unclean; whether oven or hearth, it shall be broken down. They are unclean, and they shall remain unclean for you. ³⁶Only a spring or a cistern, a collection of water, shall remain clean; but whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean. ³⁷And if any of their carcasses falls on any seed for sowing that is to be sown, it is clean. ³⁸But if water has been put on the seed and any of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you. ³⁹And if an animal that you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening. ⁴⁰And the one who eats any of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. ⁴¹And every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable; it shall not be eaten. ⁴²Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on four feet, and whatever has many feet, among all the swarming things that swarm on the earth—you shall not eat them, for they are detestable. ⁴³Do not make yourselves detestable by any swarming thing that swarms, and do not become unclean by them and so be defiled by them. ⁴⁴For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean by any swarming thing that moves on the earth. ⁴⁵For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. Therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy. ⁴⁶This is the law concerning the animal, the bird, every living creature that moves in the waters, and every creature that swarms on the earth, ⁴⁷to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten."
