Leviticus 11:1-47Clean and Unclean Food

Lev.11.1-47
1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, 2"Speak to the Israelites, saying: These are the living creatures that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. 3You may eat any animal that has a split hoof, completely divided, and that chews the cud. 4But these you shall not eat from those that chew the cud or from those that divide the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean for you. 5The rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean for you. 6The hare, because it chews the cud but has not divided the hoof, is unclean for you. 7And the pig, because it has a split hoof, completely divided, but does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. 8You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. 9This you may eat from all that are in the waters: everything that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas and in the streams, you may eat. 10But everything in the seas and in the streams that does not have fins and scales, among all the swarming things of the waters and among every living creature that is in the waters, is detestable to you. 11They shall remain detestable to you: you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall regard their carcasses as detestable. 12Everything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you. 13And these you shall regard as detestable among the birds; they shall not be eaten, for they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, and the black vulture; 14the kite and the falcon according to its kind; 15every raven according to its kind; 16the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, and the hawk according to its kind; 17the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl; 18the white owl, the desert owl, and the osprey; 19the stork, the heron according to its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. 20Every winged swarming thing that goes on four feet is detestable to you. 21Yet these you may eat among all the winged swarming things that go on four feet: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground. 22Of these you may eat: the locust according to its kind, the bald locust according to its kind, the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind. 23But every other winged swarming thing that has four feet is detestable to you. 24And by these you shall become unclean: everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until evening. 25And everyone who carries any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. 26Every animal that divides the hoof but does not completely split it, or does not chew the cud, is unclean for you; everyone who touches it shall be unclean. 27And every animal that walks on its paws among all the animals that go on four feet is unclean for you; everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean until evening. 28And the one who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean for you. 29And these are unclean for you among the swarming things that swarm on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and the great lizard according to its kind; 30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon. 31These are unclean for you among all the swarming things; everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. 32And anything on which one of them falls when it is dead shall be unclean, whether any article of wood or garment or skin or sackcloth—any article with which work is done. It shall be put into water and remain unclean until evening; then it shall be clean. 33And every clay vessel into which one of them falls, everything that is inside it shall be unclean, and you shall break the vessel. 34Any food that may be eaten, if water from such a vessel comes on it, shall be unclean, and any drink that may be drunk in any such vessel shall be unclean. 35And everything on which any of their carcasses falls shall be unclean; whether oven or hearth, it shall be broken down. They are unclean, and they shall remain unclean for you. 36Only a spring or a cistern, a collection of water, shall remain clean; but whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean. 37And if any of their carcasses falls on any seed for sowing that is to be sown, it is clean. 38But if water has been put on the seed and any of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you. 39And if an animal that you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening. 40And the one who eats any of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. 41And every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable; it shall not be eaten. 42Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on four feet, and whatever has many feet, among all the swarming things that swarm on the earth—you shall not eat them, for they are detestable. 43Do not make yourselves detestable by any swarming thing that swarms, and do not become unclean by them and so be defiled by them. 44For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean by any swarming thing that moves on the earth. 45For I am the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. Therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy. 46This is the law concerning the animal, the bird, every living creature that moves in the waters, and every creature that swarms on the earth, 47to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten."
