Numbers 1:1-54 — The First Census
Num.1.1-54
1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2"Take a census of the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head; 3from twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel who is able to go out to war. You and Aaron shall register them by their divisions. 4And with you there shall be a man from each tribe, each man the head of his fathers' house. 5These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; 6from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai ; 7from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran; 14from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; 15from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan." 16These were the ones called from the congregation, the leaders of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18and they assembled the whole congregation on the first day of the second month. And they registered their ancestry by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head. 19Just as the LORD had commanded Moses, so he registered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20Now the sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 21those registered of them for the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. 22Of the sons of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, those registered of them according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 23those registered of them for the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. 24Of the sons of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 25those registered of them for the tribe of Gad were 45,650. 26Of the sons of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 27those registered of them for the tribe of Judah were 74,600. 28Of the sons of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 29those registered of them for the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. 30Of the sons of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 31those registered of them for the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. 32Of the sons of Joseph: of the sons of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 33those registered of them for the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. 34Of the sons of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 35those registered of them for the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. 36Of the sons of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 37those registered of them for the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. 38Of the sons of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 39those registered of them for the tribe of Dan were 62,700. 40Of the sons of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 41those registered of them for the tribe of Asher were 41,500. 42The sons of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war: 43those registered of them for the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. 44These are the ones who were registered, whom Moses and Aaron registered, along with the leaders of Israel, twelve men; each man was for his fathers' house. 45So all those registered of the sons of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out to war in Israel, 46all those registered were 603,550. 47But the Levites, according to the tribe of their fathers, were not registered among them. 48For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 49"Only the tribe of Levi you shall not register, and you shall not take a census of them among the sons of Israel. 50But you shall appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall attend to it, and they shall camp around the tabernacle. 51When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And the outsider who comes near shall be put to death. 52The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their divisions. 53But the Levites shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, so that there will be no wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel. And the Levites shall keep charge of the Tabernacle of the Testimony." 54Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses , so they did.
