John 5:16-47 — The Authority of the Son

John.5.16-47

¹⁶And for this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. ¹⁷But he answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” ¹⁸For this reason, therefore, the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he not only was breaking the Sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God . ¹⁹So Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, unless he sees the Father doing it. For whatever that one does, these things the Son also does likewise. ²⁰For the Father loves the Son and shows him all things that he himself is doing, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may marvel. ²¹For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he wishes. ²²For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, ²³so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴Truly, truly, I say to you that whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. ²⁵Truly, truly, I say to you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. ²⁶For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted the Son to have life in himself. ²⁷And he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man . ²⁸Do not marvel at this, because an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹and will come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have practiced evil to the resurrection of judgment. ³⁰I can do nothing of my own accord. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me. ³¹If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid . ³²There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. ³³You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. ³⁴But the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵That one was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. ³⁶But I have the testimony that is greater than that of John; for the works that the Father has given me so that I may accomplish them, the very works that I am doing, testify about me that the Father has sent me. ³⁷And the Father who sent me, that one has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his form, ³⁸and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe the one whom that one sent. ³⁹You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that testify about me, ⁴⁰and you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life. ⁴¹I do not receive glory from men, ⁴²but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. ⁴³I have come in the name of my Father, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. ⁴⁴How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? ⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. ⁴⁶For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for that one wrote about me. ⁴⁷But since you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
