Genesis 20:1-18 — Abraham and Abimelech

Gen.20.1-18

¹Abraham journeyed from there to the region of the Negev , and settled between Kadesh and Shur. Then he lived as a foreigner in Gerar. ²Abraham said concerning his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. ³But God came to Abimelech in a dream at night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a married woman.” ⁴Now Abimelech had not come near her, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy even a righteous nation? ⁵Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself also said, 'He is my brother.' I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands." ⁶Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not allow you to touch her. ⁷Now therefore, return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will surely die, you and all who belong to you." ⁸So Abimelech rose early in the morning, summoned all his servants, and recounted all these things in their hearing; and the men were greatly afraid. ⁹Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? You have done things to me that should not be done.” ¹⁰Abimelech also said to Abraham, “What did you see , that you did this thing?” ¹¹Abraham said, "Because I thought, 'Surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me on account of my wife.' ¹²Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. ¹³And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is your loyalty which you must show to me: at every place where we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”' ¹⁴Then Abimelech took sheep and cattle, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned his wife Sarah to him. ¹⁵And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; settle wherever it seems good in your eyes.” ¹⁶To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for you a covering of the eyes to all who are with you; and before everyone you are vindicated.” ¹⁷Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his female servants, so that they bore children. ¹⁸For the LORD had completely closed all the wombs of the household of Abimelech on account of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
