Genesis 4:1-16 — Cain and Abel
Gen.4.1-16
1Now Adam was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have acquired a man with the help of Yahweh.” 2And again she gave birth, to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of flocks, and Cain was a worker of the ground. 3In the course of time, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground. 4And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And Yahweh looked with favor on Abel and on his offering, 5but on Cain and on his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain became very angry, and his face fell. 6Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it." 8Cain spoke to his brother Abel. And it happened, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He said, “I do not know! Am I my brother's keeper?” 10And He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground! 11Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." 13Cain said to Yahweh, "My punishment is too great to bear! 14Behold, you have driven me out today from the face of the ground, and from your face I will be hidden. I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." 15Then Yahweh said to him, “Therefore, if anyone kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And Yahweh set a mark on Cain, so that anyone who found him would not strike him down. 16So Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
