Genesis 44:1-34 — A Silver Cup in a Sack
Gen.44.1-34
1Then he commanded the steward of his house, saying, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's silver in the opening of his sack. 2And put my cup, the silver cup, in the opening of the sack of the youngest, along with the silver for his grain." And he did according to the word of Joseph that he had spoken. 3As morning dawned, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. 4They had gone out of the city, but had not gone far, when Joseph said to his steward, "Rise up, pursue the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good? 5Is this not the one from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed practices divination? You have done evil in what you have done.'" 6So he overtook them and spoke these words to them. 7And they said to him, "Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! 8Behold, the silver that we found in the openings of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord's house? 9Whichever of your servants it is found with shall die, and we also will become slaves to my lord." 10And he said, “Now let it be just as you say: the one with whom it is found will be my slave, but the rest of you will be innocent.” 11Then they hurried and each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. 12And he searched, beginning with the oldest and finishing with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. 13Then they tore their clothes , and each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city. 14Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house while he was still there, and they fell to the ground before him. 15Joseph said to them, “What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me can indeed practice divination?” 16And Judah said, “What can we say to my lord? What can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has uncovered the guilt of your servants. Behold, we are slaves to my lord, both we and the one in whose hand the cup was found.” 17But he said, “Far be it from me to do this! The man in whose hand the cup was found, he will be my slave, but as for you, go up in peace to your father.” 18Then Judah approached him and said, "Please, my lord, let your servant speak a word in the ears of my lord, and do not let your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself. 19"My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Do you have a father or a brother?' 20"And we said to my lord, 'We have an elderly father, and a young boy born in his old age. His brother is dead, so he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.' 21"Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, so that I may set my eyes on him.' 22"And we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father, for if he were to leave his father, his father would die.' 23"But you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.' 24"So when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25"And our father said, 'Go back, buy us a little food.' 26"But we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down, for we cannot appear before the man if our youngest brother is not with us.' 27"Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28"One went out from me, and I said, 'Surely he has been torn to pieces,' and I have not seen him since. 29"If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to Sheol .' 30"Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, since his life is bound up with the boy's life, 31"it will happen that when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father in sorrow to Sheol. 32"For your servant became a guarantee for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I will bear the blame before my father all my days.' 33"Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a slave to my lord, and let the boy go up with his brothers. 34“For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? Lest I see the evil that would come upon my father.”
